A Trip to Ayusai: Nature, Adventure, and Kazakh Cuisine

07/Mar/2025

Recently, my colleague Alibek and I decided to take a small trip to Ayusai – a place just 30 minutes away from the center of Almaty, yet offering a complete escape into nature. It was a spontaneous trip, but honestly, those are the ones that leave the best memories.

How We Got There

We left early in the morning while the city was still waking up. At this time, the air is especially fresh, and the road to Ayusai runs through the scenic landscapes of Ile-Alatau National Park. For those without personal transport, you can take bus No. 211, but we opted for a car—it’s more convenient and gives you flexibility with time.

A Hidden Gem in the Mountains

The name "Ayusai" translates to "Bear Gorge" due to the presence of Tian Shan brown bears in the region. Despite its proximity to the bustling city, Ayusai is a sanctuary of unspoiled wilderness. The area is home to the Ayusai Visitor Center, which opened in 2021 with a mission to promote eco-tourism, educate visitors, and develop sustainable travel experiences.

Ethno Café Tary: A Unique Culinary Experience

One of the highlights of our trip was a visit to Ethno Café Tary, a cozy spot offering a variety of delicious breakfasts and traditional Kazakh dishes. Here’s what you can try:

  • Horse meat pâté – a rich and flavorful spread.

  • Kazy (traditional Kazakh sausage) – a must-try delicacy.

  • Horse meat soup – warm and hearty.

  • Horse meat burger – a fusion of tradition and modern flavors.

  • Tary coffee – a unique drink made with tary, a traditional Kazakh delicacy of roasted millet added to tea.

  • Tary cheesecake and ice cream – a delightful blend of local flavors, including an option with mare’s milk.

Things to Do in Ayusai

Ayusai is a paradise for nature lovers and adventure seekers. Whether you're a casual visitor or an experienced hiker, there’s something for everyone:

  • Explore the hiking trails:

    • Myn Koz Trail – an easy route, great for beginners and families, featuring artistic installations by Kazakh artist Sanzhar Zhubanov.

    • Japanese Trail – a moderate hike with fascinating history and diverse flora.

    • Ayusai Waterfalls Trail – a scenic trek leading to three stunning waterfalls.

  • Take part in eco-activities: The visitor center organizes workshops, quests, lectures, and even movie nights.

  • Join a guided tour: Learn about the region’s flora, fauna, and conservation efforts with a professional guide.

  • Go glamping or camping: Stay overnight in Tau Tas Glamping & Camping and immerse yourself in nature.

  • Enjoy an electric bike ride: Rent an e-bike to reach Big Almaty Lake, as car access is restricted.

  • Buy souvenirs: The visitor center has a shop selling local handicrafts and eco-friendly products.

Where to Stay

If you decide to extend your visit, you can stay overnight at the Tau Tas glamping and camping site. These are comfortable cabins and tents nestled in nature—perfect for escaping city life and spending a night under the stars.
